A PLEASANT GATHERING

"One of the prominent features of our County Fair was the Soldiers' Reunion.   From various parts of this and other states a large number came together to talk of by-gone days, when wearing the knapsack and carrying the musket was to endure hardship at a sacrifice of great privations; to talk of those days and renew that endearing fellowship which keeps company to a warm heart, and brings a loyal flush when two soldier-veterans meet.

It refers to nearly twenty years ago, when we laid down our arms, and the object and victory was gained of a terrible conflict.   Those who were among us were then young men.   Today their hairs are gray, and to assemble in reunion gives a pleasure only to be appreciated by those concerned.   The gathering at our fairgrounds was a pleasant and admired feature, which will be remembered many days to come.

Speeches made on the occasion by Gen. John A. McClernand, Capt. J.H. Rowell, and Maj. M. Wemple were well received."
